Los Angeles police officers are responding to an ongoing incident involving a man barricaded inside a vehicle on the steps of City Hall, according to LAPD Media Relations.

The call came in around 4:08 p.m. Officers arrived to find a vehicle on the steps of City Hall, near Broadway and south of First Street in downtown Los Angeles.

Police say the man inside appeared to be refusing to come out and was holding what looked like an oxygen tank, along with two handwritten signs one reading, “Don’t Want To Hurt No Body,” and the other stating, “I NEED UR HELP D TRUMP U.S. VET.”

People in the area, including those inside City Hall, were evacuated as a precaution. Officials told KTLA that areas surrounding City Hall were blocked off while the situation remained active.

After about two hours, officials were able to de-escalate the situation. The man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody, according to authorities.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she had been briefed on the situation.

“I’ve been briefed on the ongoing incident outside of City Hall, which is currently being evacuated out of an abundance of caution,” Bass said in a post on X. “I want to thank all first responders who are at the scene my office will continue to monitor the situation.”
