Live updates: Senate to vote on bills to end shutdown; Tensions rise over Trump troop deployments

Two big stories are roiling Washington as the Senate prepares for votes later today on ending the government shutdown, and a federal judge late Sunday temporarily halted President Trump’s efforts to send any National Guard troops to Oregon.

The order the second in as many days followed pledges from Oregon’s leaders to fight the mobilization of troops to quell what Trump calls a city “under siege.”

Texas National Guard members have also been authorized to head to Oregon and Illinois, news broken Sunday night by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D). Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday night told Pritzker to protect federal personnel or “get out of the way” as Abbott confirmed the authorization. Pritzker called the mobilization an “invasion.”

In Washington, Trump has no public events, but there is a White House press briefing scheduled.

In the government shutdown’s sixth day, the Senate is expected to vote on two funding bills that could reopen operations, but that is not expected.
