Several recent Jacksonville shootings spark concern among local residents

First Coast News Crime and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson says it’s nearly impossible for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to patrol just one area.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A violent weekend in Jacksonville left multiple people injured, including a woman shot in the face on Post Street. She currently remains in critical condition.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, what started as an argument, quickly turned violent.

The suspect fired a single shot, hitting the victim in the face.

Police confirmed the victim and suspect knew each other, and the suspect has since been taken into custody.

This is one of several shootings that have sparked concern. First Coast News heard from those directly impacted.

Longtime Murray Hill resident Berry Corker said crime in the neighborhood is a major concern—and he wants to see more police patrols.

“You can kind of patrol the area a little more like right around here, but other than that, there’s not much you can do when someone plans on coming by and shooting someone like that,” Corker said.

First Coast News Crime and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson says it’s nearly impossible for JSO to patrol just one area.

“But if they circle around a place several times it looks like it’s more than one officer that’s patrolling that particular area and that’s the purpose for it being a one-man car they can cover more area, more ground,” Jefferson said.

Jefferson said JSO heavily relies on the community to prevent crimes like this from happening.

First Coast News reached out to JSO for comment, but the sheriff’s office is closed due to the holiday.
