Louisiana Parade Chaos: Vehicle Crash Leaves 13 Injured, Sheriff’s Office Reports

In a distressing turn of events, a vehicle plowed into a group of parade participants, resulting in numerous injuries during the Lao New Year celebrations on Saturday in New Iberia, Louisiana. More than a dozen individuals were subsequently hospitalized.

According to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at a rural junction, leaving several people hurt. Emergency responders quickly mobilized to the scene to provide assistance.

Acadian Ambulance, a local emergency medical service provider, confirmed that they transported 11 individuals to the hospital via ambulance. Additionally, two critically injured patients were airlifted by medical helicopter for urgent care.

Authorities from the sheriff’s office have indicated that some of the injuries sustained in this unfortunate incident are believed to be severe.

Officials identified the crash site as the intersection of Savannakhet Street and Melancon Road, where the joyful celebration was interrupted by the tragic accident.

Video shared on social media appeared to show multiple people on the ground, as firefighters attempted to rescue a person trapped underneath the vehicle in a ditch.

Ten ambulances and two helicopters responded to the scene, according to Acadian.

Deputies confirmed the driver, who has not yet been publicly identified, is in custody.

Based on the preliminary investigation, officials said the wreck “does not appear to be an intentional act.”

It is unclear what led to the incident.

New Iberia is a small Cajun town located in southern Louisiana, about 30 minutes away from Lafayette.
