In a high-profile murder trial, New York jurors involved in the case of the accused CEO killer, Luigi Mangione, will remain anonymous. This protective measure follows the judge’s concern that the jurors could face “harassment, intimidation, or improper outside influence” if their identities were made public.
On Tuesday, Judge Gregory Carro disclosed that only the prosecuting and defense attorneys will be privy to the jurors’ personal information, including their names and addresses.
Jury selection for the trial is slated to begin on September 8.
Judge Carro cited the aggressive behavior of individuals purporting to support Mangione as a key factor in his decision. These individuals have made “inflammatory and hostile public statements” at the courthouse and explicitly stated their intent to engage with potential jurors during the selection process.
“Considering the unprecedented public scrutiny and the documented cases of threatening behavior outside the courthouse, it’s evident that exposing jurors’ identities publicly could severely compromise the justice process,” Carro detailed in his order. “Limiting public access to juror information while providing it to the involved legal parties is a justified and essential precaution.”
Defense lawyers opposed withholding the names of jurors, arguing that prosecutors failed to demonstrate an “actual threat to the safety or integrity of the jury” and alleged that the concerns raised by prosecutors were “speculative” and “hypothetical.”
“They have identified no specific facts demonstrating that any actual, existing threat to the safety or integrity of the jury presently exists,” Mangione’s lawyers wrote.
