The building is scheduled to be fully demolished Tuesday morning.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — North Main Street is blocked at 14th Street East in Jacksonville’s Springfield neighborhood due to a building collapse, according to Jacksonville officials. The building is scheduled to be fully demolished Tuesday morning.
JFRD said in a post on X around 5:30 p.m. Monday that their crews were working the partial building collapse.
JFRD Chief Keith Powers said crews are still working to learn how the collapse happened, and they didn’t find evidence that anyone was inside the building, but it was too unsafe to allow firefighters inside to conduct a more thorough search.
Powers said search dogs and drones were used to search the perimeter for signs that people might be trapped. Powers added that the city’s code enforcement was being dispatched to the scene to see when the rest of the building can be demolished.
JSO said North Main Street at 14th Street East will be closed, and Powers added that it will remain closed due to the risk of the rest of the building falling toward the street.
JEA spokesperson Karen McAllister said there was no active electrical service to the building at the time of the collapse, and crews were dispatched to the scene to remove the service line to the building.
