Major I-5 Freeway Closure Alert: Live Fire Drills at Camp Pendleton to Impact Traffic

A segment of Interstate 5 is set to be closed on Saturday afternoon due to a contentious live-fire military drill at Camp Pendleton, raising safety concerns among state officials.

Governor Gavin Newsom issued a strong rebuke Saturday morning, criticizing the federal government’s decision to conduct the exercise, which involves firing live artillery near the busy I-5 corridor.

“The President is prioritizing his ego over his duty to ensure public safety,” Newsom stated. “Firing live rounds over a major highway is not just inappropriate; it’s perilous.”

State authorities were initially informed of the exercise, slated for October 17-18, which includes firing near I-5, with signs cautioning drivers about “Overhead fire in progress.” Officials noted that a practice round was witnessed near the freeway on Friday. Early Saturday, the federal government confirmed the live fire event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., according to Newsom.

As a result, the California Highway Patrol has ordered a temporary closure of a section of I-5 near Camp Pendleton during the exercise, citing “extreme life safety risk” and the potential for dangerous driver distraction due to unexpected loud explosions.

In addition to the freeway closure, train service between Orange and San Diego counties has also been canceled for Saturday, following federal direction.

The I-5 freeway is a critical economic corridor for Southern California, with thousands of travelers daily. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area, plan alternate routes, and expect delays on I-5 and surrounding highways throughout Saturday.
