A fiery incident on I-95 occurred Sunday afternoon when a semi-truck, loaded with cabbage, crashed, overturned, and ignited into flames.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — I-95 experienced a temporary closure on Sunday afternoon due to a significant fire resulting from a northbound lane crash involving a semi-truck.

The accident took place at mile marker 307, situated just north of State Road 206.

By 3:30 p.m., the scene was bustling with firefighters, law enforcement, several ambulances, and a helicopter, as traffic congestion rapidly intensified in both directions.

Although by 4 p.m. most of the smoke had cleared, traffic cameras captured footage just after 3:15 p.m., showing the semi-truck ablaze and obstructing several lanes.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue said it was a crash between two vehicles. A severely damaged blue sedan was visible in the left shoulder of the highway shortly behind the semi-truck, which overturned.

The driver of the semi-truck was taken to a local hospital via helicopter with critical injuries, according to Chris Naff, a St. Johns County Fire Rescue spokesperson.

The semi-truck was hauling cabbages, which spilled out onto the road after the collision. Diesel fuel also leaked onto the roadway, and a hazmat team was called out to clean up, Naff said.

Traffic in the southbound lanes began moving again around 4:15 p.m, but the northbound lanes could remain closed for hours as crews work to clean up the debris and fuel.
