Malcolm in the Middle star sparks fan concern with first reunion snap

Malcolm in the Middle enthusiasts found themselves concerned about one of the show’s cherished cast members after a behind-the-scenes snapshot from the anticipated reboot took the internet by storm.

Frankie Muniz, the leading star of the sitcom, shared a nostalgic moment on Instagram this past Thursday, celebrating the much-anticipated reunion of his TV family with a candid picture alongside his on-screen siblings, Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson, known to fans as Reese and Francis.

‘I was told not to post this yet, but then I remembered the theme song,’ Muniz joked in the caption, referencing Boss of Me, the track that opened the hit Fox series, which ran from 2000 to 2006 and earned seven Emmys. ‘I’m just too excited for y’all to see the new episodes and I miss my brothers.’

While the reunion of the iconic trio delighted many fans, the image also ignited a wave of worry regarding Berfield. Positioned between Muniz and Masterson, Berfield’s noticeably different appearance, two decades after the series concluded, left followers doing a double-take.

One fan questioned, “Reese??? Baby, is that you????”, while another noted, “Wow, he looks much slimmer than he did during the show!”

Echoing these concerns, other fans commented with remarks like, “Reese? Blink twice if you’re OK,” and “I barely recognized him.”

Fans of Malcolm in the Middle were left worried over one of the show¿s beloved cast members after a behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming reboot went viral.

Daily Mail has not received a response to its request for comment from Berfield.

Some fans went even further, with one saying ‘he looks hella different,’ and one quipping, ‘Who’s the random British guy?’

Another joked, ‘LOL Reese looks like he turned European.’

Berfield, 39, who began acting at just five years old in a Folgers coffee commercial, ultimately stepped away from Hollywood after Malcolm in the Middle ended.

He later transitioned behind the scenes, becoming Chief Creative Officer at Virgin Produced — the entertainment arm of Richard Branson’s Virgin Group.

Speaking to Variety in 2010, he explained, ‘We are developing and producing films and television shows that are far from traditional. We aren’t afraid to push the envelope with content.’

A year later, he told Agoura Hills Patch what inspired his pivot from acting to producing, saying, ‘I realised that I had been on two shows that syndicated to over 100 episodes and that I felt fulfilled as an actor and decided to try my hand at producing.

‘I think people constantly are looking for fulfilment, and nothing is ever good enough, but I feel fortunate enough to have had the journey I have had so far.’

Comparing his two careers, he added, ‘They’re both unique in their own ways, but I’m enjoying what I’m doing and where I’m at right now.

‘It’s a whole new level of stress. It’s a different kind of stress, but they’re both rewarding.’

Now Berfield leads a much more private life, raising two children with his wife, Liza Almeida, whom he married in 2017.

Meanwhile, in the comments of Muniz’s post, others turned their attention to another missing Malcolm alum — youngest brother Dewey, originally played by Erik Per Sullivan.

Others expressed concern over the absence of Malcolm’s youngest brother, Dewey — the fan-favorite character originally played by Erik Per Sullivan.

As one fan explained in the comment section, ‘For those asking for Dewey, he will be replaced by another actor because Dewey (the actor) wanted to focus in his studies so they respect his decision.’

That theory was later confirmed by Bryan Cranston, who, along with Jane Kaczmarek, portrayed Muniz’s parents in the beloved series.

‘I talked to Erik and I said, “Hey, we got the show! It’s gonna come back.” He goes, “Oh, that’s fantastic!” And I go, “Yeah, so we’re looking forward to having you back.” He goes, “Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic that you are,”’ Cranston revealed during a June appearance on the Fly on the Wall podcast.

‘He’s actually going to Harvard,’ the actor added. ‘He’s really, really smart, and I think he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now. He said, “Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something. So I’m not into it.”’

When news of the reboot — titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair — was announced last December, it was confirmed that both Cranston and Kaczmarek would reprise their iconic roles.

Berfield and Masterson later signed on for the four-episode Disney+ revival, which also stars Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend.

Newcomers Vaughan Murrae, Keeley Karsten, and Caleb Ellsworth-Clark round out the cast — with Ellsworth-Clark notably stepping into the role of Dewey.

Reflecting on the experience last month, Muniz admitted the project exceeded his expectations.

‘I’m not exaggerating when I say filming this reboot, like I loved it so much, way more than I ever thought I could have,’ he said on a podcast.

‘I think people will be surprised, in a sense, where everybody is and the story. But it’s only four episodes… It’s hard to fit in 20 years of stuff into four 30-minute episodes, right?

‘But I think people are going to be very happy with what they came up with.’
