The GBI said 58-year-old Jon Worrell is charged with malice murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the 2006 shooting death of his wife Doris Worrell.

DOUGLAS, Ga. — A man is behind bars Tuesday night following his arrest for the murder of his wife nearly 20 years after her death in South Georgia, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and Coffee County Sheriff’s Office said in statements.

The GBI said they arrested and charged 58-year-old Jon Worrell with malice murder, felony murder, and conspiracy to commit murder, and aggravated battery in the 2006 shooting death of his wife Doris Worrell.

Jon was arrested Tuesday morning in Marysville, Missouri, according to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, where he is a current resident.

Doris was killed on Sept. 20, 2006 at the couple’s business, Jon’s Sports Park, in Douglas, Georgia. Doris, 39 at the time, was found shot and killed inside the business.

The GBI said they investigated the case with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office over the years, pursuing leads both in the U.S. and overseas.

According to a GBI press release at the time, Jon told police he left the business at around 9:40 a.m. to run errands. His wife remained on the property to clean. Jon told authorities when he returned around 11:15 a.m., he found his wife’s body.

The GBI said they and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, alongside the Waycross Judicial Circuit D.A.’s Office, will speak to the media Friday with more information on the decades-long investigation.
