Mud-covered man wearing only a Speedo, arrested after running from Colorado police

DENVER (KDVR) What was meant to be a relaxing day at some Colorado hot springs quickly turned into a tense police chase after a man allegedly fled from police, covered in mud, and wearing only a Speedo.

On Aug. 26, Clear Creek Dispatch alerted police in Idaho Springs, Colorado, to a suspect who was wanted in Douglas County at the Indian Hot Springs after reports of credit card fraud and stolen identification on that day.

The suspect was identified as Alec Bogus.

According to the arrest affidavit, police responded to the hot springs, where they found Bogus in a mud bath and confronted him about the alleged credit card fraud. Bogus denied the claim before the officers mentioned the warrant from Douglas County and told him that he would be going with them to jail.

The officers were letting the muddy man take a shower before they left, but while escorting Bogus, he ran from them, covered in mud and only wearing a Speedo. Body camera footage released by police, seen in the video above, showed Bogus, covered in mud, walking through a room before appearing to bolt from officers.

The video then shows an officer running after Bogus, alerting dispatch of a “white man covered in mud and underway.”

Authorities said Bogus ran through a parking lot before climbing up a hill past cabins.

A drone was deployed, which spotted Bogus at an intersection. The officer drove his vehicle to the area after a different officer possibly tore ligaments in his leg during the chase, according to the affidavit. Another pursuing officer injured his knee while running up the hill, but it’s unclear whether he required treatment.

Bogus was tracked to the home of a resident, who told police that he saw him run in the direction of his shed. Police said they approached the shed, opened the door, and found Bogus hiding inside. He complied with orders and was arrested by the officers.

The affidavit stated that “no search incident to arrest was necessary as Bogus ran from us in a pair of black Speedos and no other clothing.” Bogus also injured his knee in the chase and was taken to a local hospital after his arrest.

He was later booked into the Clear Creek County Jail on multiple charges, including assault on a police officer, second-degree burglary, escape, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest. Authorities said Bogus also had a felony warrant out of Douglas County for assault.
