The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says the man got into the confrontation with two unknown individuals, who fled westbound on Sunbeam Road on foot.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was shot and killed early Friday morning after being involved in a “confrontation” at a Circle K on Jacksonville’s Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).
At approximately 1 a.m., JSO Sergeant Rudlaff says officers responded to the Circle K, which is located at 4525 Sunbeam Rd., in reference to gunfire. When they arrived, the man was found shot; he was 40 years old, according to Rudlaff.
The man was then taken to Memorial Hospital where he died, Rudlaff told First Coast News.
“At this time, we do know that the victim came up to the Circle K,” Rudalff said. “He was inside the store. Upon exiting the store, he got into a confrontation with two unknown individuals out in the parking lot. This confrontation escalated and the victim was shot.”
Rudlaff further explained the confrontation was verbal, not physical, and that multiple gunshots were fired, as “it looks like there was only one gun used.”
Witnesses told the sheriff’s office both suspects ran away from the gas station, traveling westbound on Sunbeam Road. Rudlaff added that the suspects came from the same direction when arriving at the gas station before the shooting occurred.
When asked if JSO believes the shooting was random, Rudlaff said: “At this point, it’s too early to tell. We are gonna have to get with family. We’re gonna be pulling video. We’re gonna be canvassing the area. Hopefully we’ll be able to get a lot more video down the street, depicting where these gentlemen ran to.”
Rudlaff said JSO is talking with a person, identified as a “witness,” who came to the gas station with the man who was killed.
Circle K sent First Coast News the following statement regarding the deadly shooting:
We are shocked and saddened about the incident that occurred last night on our property. As we tend to the needs of our store team, we are supporting the investigation and ask that any questions be directed to JSO at this time. We will not be sharing video.”
