JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The community surrounding Mandarin High School can breathe a sigh of relief as officials have confirmed that there is no longer any threat to the campus. The school is set to operate normally on Friday following the swift arrest of a student who had made a troubling threat online.
On Thursday night, a student from Mandarin High School posted a threat on social media, indicating plans for a shooting at the school. This alarming message was swiftly brought to the attention of Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) through the Fortify Florida app, a platform designed for reporting potential threats.
In a rapid response, the Duval County School Police team launched an investigation. According to a DCPS spokesperson who spoke with First Coast News, the authorities worked through the night and managed to apprehend the student responsible for the post “within hours.”
To ensure the safety and peace of mind for students and staff, Principal Sara Bravo has announced an increased police presence at the school on Friday. While the identity of the student has not been disclosed, the DCPS confirmed through a Facebook post that the individual will face criminal charges for the threat.
The student, whose identity was not released, will face criminal charges, DCPS said in a Facebook post.
DCPS shared the message Principal Bravo sent to families about the incident with First Coast News, which can be read below:
“Good morning Mandarin families, This is Principal Bravo I apologize for needing to call at this hour, but I wanted update you on the threat we received through Fortify Florida last evening. The threat was to carry out a shooting on our campus. Through the outstanding work of our school police department, the originator of the post has been located and arrested. There is no longer a threat to the school. We will still have a police presence to ensure our students, faculty and staff can put their mind at ease but again there is no threat to the school and all other school procedures will operate as normal. Again, I apologize for the hour of this message but I wanted to provide you with this update and I look forward to seeing our Mustangs as we make it a great Friday. Thank you to all those who have reported this threat via Fortify Florida. Have a Good Friday.”
