Thousands protest in St. Louis over federal immigration policies

ST. LOUIS — A protest in downtown St. Louis as federal funding delays forced the International Institute of St. Louis to furlough over 60% of its staff statewide.

The protest, which saw over 1,000 participants, was in response to recent actions by the Trump administration that suspended numerous immigration initiatives, including refugee resettlement programs. The furloughs have significantly impacted not only the employees but also the families who rely on the institute’s services.

“My grandfather and mother migrated here for a better future and I was only one year old, my first language is English. All I know is America,” said one protester.

“Why wouldn’t I be here? These people belong here. Especially the dreamers, especially the workers, we’re an inclusive country; it’s all about immigration, isn’t it?” said another.

The protestors marched down Broadway and Washington, eventually circling back to Kiener Plaza. Business owners, caretakers, and laborers joined the demonstration, united by their shared goal of supporting immigrant communities.

“I don’t know what I would do if I were to be sent back because I’ve lived here all my life, as so many have lived here all their lives and just wanted to come here for a better future,” one protester shared.

Another protester added, “This country was founded by immigrants! Essentially, we’re all immigrants, and this round-up of people it’s just very un-American.”

With no clear end date for the funding delays, the International Institute hopes to restore full operations once federal funds are released, continuing to support the community during the delay.
