Mavericks adding Frank Vogel as Jason Kidd assistant

A role reversal is on the horizon for one former NBA head coach.

According to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday, Frank Vogel is set to be promoted to the role of assistant coach with the Mavericks alongside Jason Kidd.

Interestingly, Kidd was the assistant coach for Frank Vogel and the Lakers from 2019 to 2021.

Both Kidd and Vogel brought an NBA championship ring to Los Angeles in 2020.

Vogel has been with the Mavericks since October 2, 2024, initially serving as a coaching consultant to Jason Kidd, who is anticipated to sign a contract extension with Dallas.

The last time Vogel was a head coach was back in 2023, as the Suns’ head coach.

However, Vogel’s time in Phoenix was short-lived. Despite guiding the team to a 49-33 record and a playoff berth as the sixth seed in the Western Conference, he was swiftly let go after a series sweep by the Timberwolves.

Before that stint, Vogel, with Kidd as his assistant, coached the Lakers. After bringing home the championship in 2020, his results began to dip.

In his final two seasons, Vogel’s overall record was 75-79, and he was fired on April 11, 2022.

The Wildwood, NJ, native had two other stints as head coach. His longest tenure spanned from 2011 to 2016, during which the Pacers led them to the playoffs for the first time since 2006 in his inaugural season.

Now, Vogel and Kidd face an uphill task after losing star Luka Doncic to the Lakers in a blockbuster trade last season.

Though one star left, another is coming to Dallas. The Mavericks were able to get the first overall pick in the draft and selected Duke star Cooper Flagg.

With Flagg on the team and joining Anthony Davis, Kidd and Vogel still have high expectations to meet.
