Medical Gulfstream Plane Bound for Bermuda Missing Near Nantucket

The U.S. Coast Guard said Saturday that it had found debris from a missing medical transport plane and would continue searching the waters off Massachusetts overnight for the six people aboard.

The debris field was discovered off Nantucket and confirmed to be from the missing Gulfstream G-100, according to the Coast Guard.

The Federal Aviation Administration notified the Coast Guard that air traffic controllers lost contact with the flight at about 2 a.m. Saturday. The aircraft was traveling from Bermuda to Boston at the time, the Coast Guard said.

Four Canadians and two Bermudans were aboard the plane.

The Bermuda Skyport Corporation, operator of LF Wade International Airport, said the Canadian-registered aircraft departed the airport at approximately 12:41 a.m. Saturday. Four crew members and two passengers were on board.

The air ambulance jet was communicating with New York air traffic controllers when its crew declared an emergency, according to air traffic audio obtained by ABC News.

After the air ambulance stopped responding, the controller asked a nearby Ethiopian Airlines flight to attempt contact. That effort also received no response, according to the audio.

The Coast Guard deployed aircraft and vessels throughout Saturday to search the waters around Nantucket.

In a Saturday night update, the agency said the Coast Guard Cutter William Sparling would continue the search overnight. Officials also said the Coast Guard would hold a news conference Sunday to provide an update on the operation.

Investigators believe the aircraft descended 7,500 feet rapidly before striking the water, a source familiar with the investigation told ABC News.
