Trump to meet on TikTok sale to avoid US ban as deadline looms

WASHINGTON () President Donald Trump is set to meet with advisors on Wednesday to discuss the potential sale of TikTok as the deadline to divest looms.

ByteDance, the app’s parent company, has until Saturday to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the United States.

Vice President JD Vance has spearheaded a lot of these efforts to secure a deal.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard are expected to attend, signaling the importance of national security concerns at the heart of the deal.

U.S. officials are particularly concerned about the data of Americans using TikTok, given ByteDance’s ownership of the app.

What happens if a deal isn’t reached?

Trump could extend the sale of deadline, as he has suggested.

However, ByteDance maintains that TikTok is not for sale and that the Chinese government would likely block any deal.

In response, Trump has suggested that tariffs on China might be eased in exchange for a deal on TikTok.

Trump is expected to release more details on his tariff plan Wednesday afternoon.
