Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger have made a conscious decision to keep their young children away from movies for the time being, and the reasoning behind this might surprise some. Despite Pratt’s extensive film career, which includes a growing collection of family-friendly titles, the couple has chosen to delay their kids’ introduction to the big screen.

Appearing on the TODAY show, Pratt humorously noted, “There will come a time when my kids will realize their dad is actually pretty cool.” This revelation, he believes, is still in the future for Lyla, 5, Eloise, 3, and Ford, who is just 16 months old. When that time comes, they will not only have Pratt’s work to explore but also that of their grandfather, renowned actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Pratt explained their approach, noting, “Katherine is quite traditional when it comes to screens and technology.” This old-school perspective means that the couple is postponing their children’s exposure to movies and other screen-related entertainment.

In the meantime, when the moment finally arrives for the kids to dive into their dad’s film library, they’ll find plenty of entertaining options, especially with the upcoming release of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Eventually, they may also discover the iconic roles their grandfather has played. Until then, the Pratt-Schwarzenegger household remains a screen-free zone for the little ones.

“Katherine is very old-school when it comes to screens and technology and all of that stuff,” Chris explained. “So, we’re waiting.”

But the actor’s 13-year-old son Jack, with ex-wife Anna Faris, went with him to Tokyo while he was promoting his Super Mario Bros. sequel and finds his dad’s PG offerings “pretty cool.”

Which, in turn, has inspired Chris to make more quality family fare, because “at the same time as wanting to make movies that would entertain my kids,” he told Men’s Journal, “I’m also thinking about creating movies that are merciful on the parents.”

In the meantime, he and Katherine are keeping their little ones busy with lots of parks and rec.
