In a resurfaced interview from 2011, Melania Trump shared insights into how she and former President Donald Trump disciplined their son Barron, now 19 years old.
Nearly 15 years ago, the current First Lady sat down with Sherrina Navani from The Mommy Helper Show, who passed away in June, to dish on all things parenting, including what she loved most about motherhood.
Back then, Barron was just a five-year-old, and today he is a sophomore at New York University.
During the interview, the Trumps were depicted as a typical family, albeit with millionaire status. Their approach to parenting was also described as surprisingly conventional.
When asked about parental discipline, Melania revealed that she took on the primary role of disciplinarian, though she noted that both she and Donald shared similar parenting methods.
Melania emphasized that both she and her husband were involved in disciplining Barron during his early years.
‘I would say I am, because I spend most of the time with him, my husband is in the office and working and then weekends, we spend together,’ Melania explained during the interview.
‘I would say I am, but we are both. My husband, you know, he’s really big on to discipline the children. No drugs, no alcohol, no cigarettes, work hard and play hard,’ she shared.

When asked which parent is more of the disciplinarian, Melania divulged that it was her – but she and her husband definitely had similar approaches overall
‘I think in one way, that is already in Barron, but he will learn more in the future as well.’
Melania also detailed some of her favorite activities she loved to do with Barron at the time, which included playing tennis and golf, as well as other games like Magna-Tiles.
‘I like to spend as much time as possible with him, because children, they need your attention, they need to see that you are involved, and they really want their mommy there,’ Melania explained.
She also revealed what her favorite thing about being a mom was, sharing an emotional response.
‘It’s unconditional love, and just time, and love,’ Melania said with a smile.
‘The laughter, I love it, it’s the giggling, and just the mind, what they say, everyday something is new,’ she continued.
‘The energy of the children and of my son, I love it.’
Of course, Melania is also the stepmom to Trump’s four other children – sons Donald Trump Jr, 47, and Eric, 41, as well as daughters Ivanka, 44, and Tiffany, 32.

Now, Barron is all grown up, but it still seems like his bond with his mom is just as strong.
During a December 2024 appearance on Fox & Friends, Melania spoke about Barron’s intelligence and how he helped to bring in new ideas for his Dad’s campaign.
‘He is a grown young man, I’m very proud of him about his knowledge, even about politics and giving advice to his father.
‘He brought in so many young people he knows his generation,’ she said on-air.
‘Because nowadays, the young generation, they don’t sit in front of TV anymore, they’re all on their tablets, they’re on their phones and all of this these podcasts and streamers,’ she explained.
‘He was very vocal and he gave advice to his father and was incredible how he brought in a success because he knew exactly who his father needs to contact and to talk to,’ she added.

During the presidential campaign, Barron Trump advised his father on podcasters to speak to as a way to reach young men, a group Trump won in the election.
And, just this past May, the President also gushed over Melania’s parenting to their son.
‘I especially want to thank one of the best moms that I know, that I’ve ever seen. Sometimes she’s almost too good,’ Trump said during an East Room event celebrating military moms ahead of Mother’s Day.
‘She is so good with Barron, but he’s grown up strong and nice. He’s a good boy. He’s a good student,’ he said.
He then added, ‘So I want to thank you, you’ve done a good job.’
