The vision behind Mets' trade deadline bullpen additions

The names are notable, but equally crucial, the strategy Mets officials employed to enhance the bullpen before the trade deadline resonated within the clubhouse.

By acquiring Gregory Soto, Tyler Rogers, and Ryan Helsley, the Mets welcomed three seasoned relievers with uniquely distinct styles that significantly differ from the team’s existing lineup.

Soto is a hard-hitting left-hander, contrasting from the softer-throwing lefty Brooks Raley. Rogers introduces a rare submarine technique and holds the MLB’s lowest average fastball velocity at 83.3 mph. On the opposite end, Helsley boasts a fastball averaging 99.3 mph, supplemented by his slider and curveball.

“We have the ability now with two lefties to really match up early on,” Ryne Stanek told Sports+ this week. “It’s a lot of guys with massively different looks. We’ave got a power lefty and a pitch-ability lefty, we’ve got power arms on the right side just to get the ball to Edwin [Diaz].”
