Miami Named America’s Rudest City, Ousting New York in New Study

New York may be famous for its brusque attitude, but a new study has crowned Miami the rudest city in America.

The Florida city of sunshine, palm trees and ocean breezes ranked first among 70 US cities analyzed for online complaints, social media criticism and internet searches tied to discourteous behavior. New York City placed fifth.

Manhattan Mental Health Counseling compiled the ranking by reviewing Yelp posts, Reddit conversations and search data involving rude conduct. Those findings were combined into scores ranging from zero to 100.

Miami led the list with a score of 94.11, narrowly surpassing Las Vegas, which posted 91.84.

Memphis, Tennessee, ranked third at 88.38, followed by Oakland, California, with 87.10.

New York completed the top five with 83.58 points, indicating that the city’s reputation for sharp elbows may have shifted south rather than disappeared altogether.

Still, New Yorkers held on to one notable — and unflattering — record: They were the most likely to complain about rude behavior.

Yelp reviews in Gotham contained references to unpleasant encounters more often than those in any other city, with 3.34% mentioning rude conduct.

That rate exceeded Miami’s 3.21% and Las Vegas’ 3.18%.

Miami, however, topped the search-data category. The city recorded 28.41 searches related to rudeness for every 10,000 residents, the highest rate among all 70 locations studied.

The Northeast also had a strong showing in the less-than-polite rankings.

Newark placed sixth nationally with a score of 82.09, just behind New York City.

Detroit came in seventh at 81.41, followed by Orlando at 81.17, Philadelphia at 78.48 and Los Angeles at 77.97.

Several other major cities ranked considerably lower on the rudeness scale.

Chicago finished 16th, Boston came in 34th and Seattle ranked 42nd.

At the opposite end of the list, Irvine, California, was named the country’s politest city. It ranked 70th — the final spot in the rudeness rankings — with a score of just 1.91.

Anchorage, Alaska, ranked 69th with 4.66 points, while Lincoln, Nebraska, placed 68th with 9.50.

Madison, Wisconsin, came in 67th at 11.81, and Boise, Idaho, rounded out the five least-rude cities in 66th place with 13.27.

“These figures capture patterns in online reviews, discussions and searches rather than measuring how every person in a city treats others,” said Natalie Buchwald, a spokesperson for Manhattan Mental Health Counseling.

“Rudeness is also shaped by context and expectations, so it’s best to view a citywide ranking as a snapshot of online signals, not a label for its residents.”
