PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A devastating incident at a Michigan synagogue unfolded last week, prompting the community to share impactful images of the aftermath on social media. The synagogue, located in suburban Detroit, suffered significant fire damage after a man drove a pickup truck into the building, leading to his own death.
Photos shared by Temple Israel depict tables laden with untouched fruits and snacks, remnants of a disrupted day near an early childhood education area. The images further reveal disarray, with exposed wiring in the hallway, charred walls, and a ceiling laid bare, alongside celebratory photos marred by the fire.
The synagogue’s decision to release these photos on Facebook came after other images surfaced in the media, reportedly causing distress to those affected by the attack. However, the synagogue chose not to provide further details on this matter.
“This is our sacred space, and we will be the ones to tell its story,” declared Temple Israel, located in West Bloomfield Township, asserting their narrative control over the event.
The tragic sequence of events began on March 12 when Ayman Ghazali, 41, drove his truck through a synagogue door after lingering in the parking lot for two hours. During the incident, he struck a security guard, and an exchange of gunfire ensued before Ghazali ultimately took his own life. According to the FBI, his vehicle contained commercial-grade fireworks and several gasoline jugs, adding a sinister layer to the attack.
No children or other staff were injured.
The FBI said it hasn’t determined a motive, though Ghazali’s ex-wife called police in Dearborn Heights around the time of the attack to warn that he seemed distraught and suicidal. Ghazali, who was a naturalized U.S. citizen, had lost family members during an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon on March 5.
