In a significant development in Middleburg, Florida, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office has announced an arrest related to a homicide investigation, though they emphasize that the case is still active and ongoing.
The incident traces back to April 6, 2026, when emergency responders were called to the scene of a vehicle fire near County Road 218 and North Mimosa Avenue in Middleburg. Upon extinguishing the flames, authorities discovered the body of a man, later identified as 41-year-old Reginald Eldrige Gantt from Jacksonville. Subsequent autopsy results confirmed that Gantt’s death was a homicide.
Following intensive investigative efforts, 38-year-old Kareem Robinson Johnson has been apprehended. He faces charges of second-degree murder, second-degree arson, and tampering with evidence. Johnson is currently being held in the Clay County Jail without the possibility of bond.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has expressed gratitude to the local community for their ongoing support and assistance, underscoring the collaborative effort necessary to further the investigation.
“While this investigation remains ongoing, we would like to thank our community for their continued assistance and support,” the agency said.
Johnson’s first appearance in court is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26.
