In a peculiar case out of New York, a Minnesota resident faces federal charges for allegedly pretending to be an FBI agent in a bid to free Luigi Mangione from incarceration. A federal grand jury has indicted the man for his audacious attempt.
The individual, identified as 36-year-old Mark Anderson, reportedly visited Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center on January 28. He is accused of masquerading as a federal official, presenting a supposed court order to facilitate Mangione’s release.
However, when detention center staff requested verification of Anderson’s identity, he reportedly offered a Minnesota driver’s license instead of federal credentials and presented a flurry of documents, as stated by federal prosecutors.
Adding to the unusual nature of the incident, officials noted that Anderson carried a bag containing a barbecue fork and a pizza cutter during his visit.
As a result of these actions, Anderson now faces charges of impersonating a federal officer.
Mangione remains held at MDC-Brooklyn while awaiting federal and state trials for the assassination-style killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.
