ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A school board in Missouri is looking to pass a measure to support students who are in the country illegally.

The Maplewood/Richmond Heights School Board is proposing a “Resolution in Support of Immigration Safety.”

The resolution would designate schools within the district as “safe zones” from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other state and federal immigration authorities.

The resolution asserts that it is the right of every child, regardless of immigration status, to access a “free public K-12 education.”

“Agents or officers for any federal, state or local agency attempting to enforce federal immigration laws are to follow district policy,” the resolution stated.

The resolution goes on to declare the district a “safe zone” for its students.

affiliate KTVI talked to district parents and area residents. Most said they support the school board’s efforts on this resolution.

KTVI contacted the board and the district for comment but did not hear back in time for air. The board is set to vote on it at its next meeting on March 27.
