Members of the community are calling for a crosswalk to be installed on Baymeadows Road in front of Wicked Barley Brewing Company.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The community continues to mourn the loss of a father and his son after a deadly crash on Baymeadows Road Friday night.

Mitchell Patch and his son were hit and killed while crossing the road in front of Wicked Barley Brewing Company. A friend of the Patch family is now starting a call to action to install a crosswalk in front of the brewery.

This stretch of Baymeadows Road is considered dangerous by people who live and work nearby. Bob lives next to the brewery.

“Baymeadows Road at nighttime is a race track. You can hear people revving their engine, they go 60 to 70 miles an hour,” Bob explained.

Bob spoke with First Coast News off-camera Monday. He said he and his neighbors have complained about people speeding along the road.

“They need something there because this road, Craven Road, and getting out of here is dangerous,” Bob said.

First Coast News reached out to Jacksonville City Councilman Joe Carlucci, who represents this part of Baymeadows Road. He confirmed his office has received complaints about this stretch of Baymeadows Road. He said it is a state road and his office has been in contact with the traffic engineering department, which made the Florida Department of Transportation aware of demands for a crosswalk.

A spokesperson for FDOT told First Coast News they review all crashes, especially ones resulting in death or injuries and evaluate whether improvements can be made for safety.

Bob hopes something will finally be done to make this road safer.

“I like to see something done and more safety because what happened Friday night shouldn’t have happened,” Bob said.
