Petition calling for Denmark to buy California secures more than 230K signatures as Trump eyes Greenland

Over 230,000 individuals have endorsed a humorous petition urging Denmark to buy California in jest to counter President Trump’s interest in attaining Greenland.

The Denmarkification initiative satirizes Trump’s well-known catchphrase and his persistent calls for expanding American territory, while seeking to collect “$1 trillion (more or less a few billion)” through crowdfunding and gathering 500,000 signatures to “Make California Great Again.”

“Let’s buy California from Donald Trump!” the petition states.

“Yes, you heard that right. California could be ours, and we need your help to make it happen.”

The petition, which offers a lifelong supply of Danish goodies if the transaction occurs, has secured nearly 235,000 endorsements by Wednesday evening.

Xavier Dutoit, the petition’s Swiss-French organizer, launched the satirical campaign after overhearing an American tourist in the Philippines boasting about the president’s longstanding dream to rename the icy island “Red, White and Blueland.”

“That American didn’t seem to grasp how unhinged and absurd it was for any country’s President – especially in a stable democracy that the USA claims to be – to offer or threaten to take over another sovereign country’s territory,” Dutoit told the Associated Press.

Dutoit said he’s been consulting with a multi-national group of friends on the petition, including Copenhagen resident Kenneth Haar.

Haar, who is Danish, insists the Trump-Greenland debate is the “biggest political issue” in the country.

“It is considered a very depressing and a very dangerous situation,” he told the outlet.

Trump, 78, has long set his sights on acquiring Greenland, a territory owned by the Kingdom of Denmark, which insists the island is not for sale.

The 47th president renewed his aspirations of acquiring Greenland after winning the 2024 election and has not ruled out the use of military force to achieve that goal — arguing the land is paramount to national security.

Greenland, which has a population of about 57,000, has been ruled by Denmark since the 19th century.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended the president’s goal of taking Greenland by highlighting US military support for the island territory and a 1951 treaty to defend it in the event of an attack.

Trump has also eyed Canada, the Panama Canal and the war-ravaged Gaza Strip as possible options for the US to expand its territory.

“Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates. Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality,” the petition says.

“It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our Nation, so California will become New Denmark. Los Angeles? More like Løs Ångeles.”

Disneyland would be renamed “Hans Christian Andersenland,” with a Mickey Mouse in a Viking helmet, the petition jests.

Organizers will send their “bestest negotiators,” including Lego executives and the Danish cast of the political drama “Borgen,” to snag the Golden State in a proposal that would “bring hygge to Hollywood, bike lanes to Beverly Hills, and organic smørrebrød to every street corner.”

“Rule of law, universal health care and fact-based politics might apply,” the petition states, noting that Trump may be open to selling the state amid his ongoing feud with Gov. Gavin Newsom and other political leaders.

“This campaign is 100% real … in our dreams,” a disclaimer at the bottom of the petition reads.

The Golden State is already home to Solvang, “the Danish capital of America.” About 45 miles north of Santa Barbara, the city “has thrived as an authentic outpost of Danish culture, traditions, architecture and cuisine,” according to its website.

Solvang boasts “Scandinavian windmills, flower-lines streets, traditional festivals, unique shops, and wine tasting rooms, restaurants, and cafes featuring both Danish favorites and wine country classics.”
