FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — A Lauderdale County animal shelter had to close early Tuesday after a cruelty investigation led to them taking in over 80 dogs.
The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies, along with animal control, went to a home on County Road 6. They had followed up on a previous animal control visit to that house.
When they arrived at the home, deputies said the resident wasn’t there and they peered through the windows and saw several dogs.
LCSO said that 82 dogs that were not properly taken care of were found at the home, with several of them per cage living there. Animal control then seized the dogs due to welfare concerns.
Florence Lauderdale Animal Services (FLAS) posted on social media around 3:22 p.m. on Tuesday, saying they would be closed for the remainder of the day due to an ’emergent situation.’
In the comments of that post, the shelter confirmed that they were closing early because they had taken in 82 dogs as part of a cruelty investigation.
The sheriff’s office said that a veterinarian will be checking all of the dogs to determine their health, and charges may be filed based on the vet’s findings but no one has been charged at this time.
