A man is now facing charges of DUI and reckless homicide following an incident in which he allegedly struck and killed an 89-year-old pedestrian in the northern suburbs last October, according to a police statement released on Thursday.

Morton Grove police reported that officers arrived at the scene of the collision on the 6800 block of Dempster Street shortly after 6 a.m. on October 17.

The investigation suggests that Jesus Guzman, a resident of Joliet, was driving a 2025 Volkswagen Jetta eastward on Dempster Street when he collided with Boris A. Nudelman. Nudelman was attempting to cross the street heading south.

Nudelman, who lived in Skokie, suffered severe injuries and was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Following their investigation, police have charged Guzman with reckless homicide involving a motor vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs. He also received citations for speeding and having tinted front windows.

At Guzman’s pretrial arraignment hearing on Friday, a judge denied the state’s request to detain him.

Guzman was released on electronic monitoring and is due back in court on March 27.

Further information was not immediately available.
