A tragic incident unfolded in Amarillo, Texas, leading to the arrest of a mother on charges of capital murder following the death of her three-year-old son. The young boy, Dawson Zamora, succumbed to severe injuries allegedly inflicted by his mother’s boyfriend, a man with a troubling criminal history.
Chelsea Berg, 30, was taken into custody on Monday, a day after Dawson passed away. The charges against her come nearly two months after investigators claim her ex-convict partner, Christopher Alexander, brutally beat the child.
Berg, who often shared polished selfies on social media, had allowed Alexander to move into her home despite the looming red flags. At the time, Alexander was under scrutiny, wearing an ankle monitor due to a prior indictment for stalking.
His criminal record includes convictions for theft and unlawful restraint. Now, prosecutors are holding Berg accountable alongside Alexander, charging her with capital murder, as they believe she shares responsibility for her son’s untimely death.
In the aftermath of this heart-wrenching case, court documents reveal the extent of the little boy’s suffering. Dawson endured ‘global brain damage,’ a brain bleed, and was covered in bruises along with other grave injuries to his stomach and chest. The community mourns the loss of such a young life under such dire circumstances.
Dawson died in hospital Sunday morning – the same day as his devastated father Dahrian Zamora’s birthday.
Zamora, who held the toddler as he took his last breath, told the Daily Mail on Tuesday that he is mourning his son’s death, but is ‘grateful’ he’s no longer hurting. He added: ‘I have some relief that he’s not dealing with that anymore.’
Berg was previously arrested for injury to a child by omission on October 14 after Dawson was admitted to hospital, but prosecutors upgraded the charges against her after her son’s death.

Zamora, in a heartbreaking Facebook post, said his ex-wife was ‘being charged at the highest degree due to her lack of effort in protecting our children.’
Prosecutors have also now been charged Alexander, 30, with capital murder of a person under 10 years old.
‘With great sorrow I come here today to notify the public that my son Dawson has passed away. He died on my birthday yesterday,’ Zamora wrote Monday.
‘His gift to me was his final breath and we are now forever interlocked with my birth and his death. He held on to spend one last birthday with me and refused to go until then.’
The heartbroken father blasted his ex’s alleged recklessness, saying: ‘My son didn’t have to die, this could have been prevented. He should have been protected and now he was murdered.’
Zamora said a six-page arrest affidavit will soon be made available to the public, which he claimed will detail Berg’s alleged involvement in Dawson’s death.
‘I’m 31 years old having to bury my three-year-old son and I obviously wasn’t prepared for this because we shouldn’t have to bury our children,’ he continued.
He went on to thank the medical staff who cared for his son during his final days, as well as the investigators and legal teams involved in Dawson’s case.

Zamora was granted custody of his son and daughter Harper after Dawson was hospitalized three months ago.
He revealed in late October that Harper was ‘safe and sound’ and had started a new school. At the time, the young girl was struggling to comprehend what was happening with her little brother.
Berg left Dawson in Alexander’s care on October 14, the morning of the alleged assault.
Alexander took the child to the hospital that afternoon after allegedly hearing a ‘thud’ and finding Dawson injured, an affidavit for his arrest said.
Dawson underwent emergency treatment and hospital staff notified police after determining the toddler’s injuries were inconsistent with the explanation the boyfriend provided.
Alexander was arrested two days later and charged with injury to a child and tampering with evidence. He has remained jailed since the initial arrest.
Dawson spent months fighting for his life in the intensive care unit, before dying in his father’s arms over the weekend.
Zamora previously claimed that scans conducted at the hospital also revealed that Dawson suffered ‘prior abuse’.
He alleged that CT and MRI scans found ‘prior bruising that was not coinciding with the healing process’ of the injuries sustained during the October assault.
Zamora has claimed that his ex-wife knew Alexander posed a danger to their family.
Alexander had been indicted for stalking not long before the attack and had previous convictions of theft and unlawful restraint.
‘He had an ankle monitor, Chelsea knew that. He was dealing with stalking allegations, Chelsea knew that,’ Zamora told KFDA in October.
A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help support the Zamora family. It has already amassed more than $54,000 in donations.
