Indignities forced on MSNBC staff as cost cutting accelerates

MSNBC stars and contributors have reportedly had to endure several indignities as the progressive network aims to cut costs amid plummeting ratings.

Recent reports from Puck News have highlighted instances where contributors to the network had to cover their own Uber expenses to reach the MSNBC DC studios. Additionally, they were also required to handle their own makeup arrangements.

As the outlet puts it, its ‘Sad, but justifiable when you’re averaging less than 600,000 viewers in total day and less than 60,000 in the demo.’

The DC studios are the home based for anchors such as former White House press secretary Jen Psaki. It was also the base for fired Joy Reid.

MSNBC has been struggling with its audience and is currently preparing to split from parent its company NBCUniversal.

Rebecca Kutler, the new chief of the network, has been implementing changes as part of the network’s shift towards a more centrist political stance. One notable change includes the discontinuation of Joy Reid’s highly confrontational show, The Reid Out.

Alongside this decision, other alterations were made, leading to the removal of shows hosted by Katie Phang, Jonathan Capehart, and Ayman Mohyeldin. However, Capehart and Mohyeldin are set to transition to new programs within the network, as part of these adjustments.

At the time, a well-placed executive told DailyMail.com that Reid had it coming – citing lukewarm contracts talks and her allegedly politically insensitive views surrounding the Israel-Hamas war

The day after news of her firing leaked, MSNBC’s marquee star Rachel Maddow took to the airwaves to complain to management about the programming changes, saying, ‘I think it is a bad mistake to let [Reid] walk out the door.’

She also griped about the people losing their shows all being persons ‘of color’, on what’s become the network’s lone source of respite when it comes to ratings, The Rachel Maddow Show.

The new lineup, meanwhile, is set to roll out later this month, under the guidance of newly minted Senior Vice President Scott Matthews.

It was a tough first trimester for MSNBC as one of its most popular shows Morning Joe  lost in the sought-after 25-54 demographic to CNN’s ‘News Central’ so far this year – a first since 2022.

The occurrence comes months after hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski flew to Mar-a-Lago to meet with the then-president-elect, days after his win in November.

That enraged many viewers of the progressive network, which was already being hit with a pronounced post-election slump – following months of MSNBC-sponsored vitriol toward Donald Trump.

Numbers viewed by DailyMail.com show how the program lost 39 percent of its audience since Trump’s win, and 46 percent when it came to the coveted 25-54 demographic.

Meanwhile Steve Kornacki has quit his role at MSNBC and will now will now devote his expertise to shows like ‘Meet the Press,’ ‘Today’ and ‘NBC Nightly News,’ as well as the network’s streaming channel, NBC News Now.

He will also provide stats for big sporting events aired by the Peacock Network like the Triple Crown races, the Olympics and the NFL.

The data reporter is one of few on-air talents who has found success with both conservative and liberal fanbases – thanks to his relentlessly information-driven updates, delivered with no hint as to his personal beliefs.

Following Kornacki’s exit the catalog of shows will have to make due without contributions from the data maven, whose new title at NBC as a contributor will be chief data analyst.

He was first propelled to stardom during the 2020 election, before widening his scope to include sports in 2021.

He covered the 2024 election as well, using data to stand up statements from mainstays like Reid and Maddow.

During that span, his khakis and enthusiasm for numbers earned him an impressive following – one that MSNBC now seems set to lose.

The SpinCo spin-off agreement, meanwhile, is expected to be close sometime soon, this year.
