Music Icon Joni Mitchell Officially Becomes a U.S. Citizen

Joni Mitchell is giving her classic song “Both Sides, Now” a fresh perspective after officially becoming a United States citizen.

In a social media post Tuesday, Mitchell shared a photo of herself smiling in front of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security flag and an American flag. “A journey that began 62 years ago,” she wrote in the caption.

The singer-songwriter also posted video from the ceremony. As the announcer introduced her as “Joni Mitchell, Canada,” the audience applauded while she rose from her seat.

ABC News has contacted a representative for Mitchell for additional comment.

Mitchell was born Nov. 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta. Her family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, when she was 9, and the singer has long described Saskatoon as her hometown, according to the biography on her website.

She moved to the United States in 1965 with folk singer Chuck Mitchell. The following year, she performed a short set at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island.

Mitchell began establishing herself as a solo artist in 1967 and released her debut album, “Song to a Seagull,” in 1968. She has since put out 18 studio albums, nearly all of which were recorded and produced in the U.S.

Throughout her career, Mitchell has occasionally spoken about living and working in the United States without American citizenship.

During the 2024 Joni Jam concert at the Hollywood Bowl—her first headlining Los Angeles show in 24 years—Mitchell encouraged the crowd to vote, according to the New Musical Express.

“This is an important one,” she said. “I wish I could vote — I’m Canadian. One of those lousy immigrants.”
