Residents of Los Angeles can now spot Alysa Liu not just on their social media feeds, but prominently displayed on a massive mural in their city.

Recently, a mural celebrating the figure skater, who studies at UCLA, has emerged in Los Angeles. This striking piece honors her recent victory at the Milano Cortina Winter Games, and it’s impressively large.

The artist behind this creation is Gustavo Zermeño Jr. In an interview with NBC4 on Wednesday, he shared that he began working on the mural at 15532 Crenshaw Blvd. in Gardena on Tuesday. He was inspired by Liu’s gold-medal-winning performances in Italy.

“Her personality has really struck a chord with people across the US,” Zermeño remarked. “Although she hails from the Bay Area and attends UCLA, giving her a connection to Los Angeles, my goal was to paint something that not only inspired me but also resonated with the nation and the younger generation.”

This mural captures Liu in the moments following her historic achievement on February 19, when she brought home America’s first Olympic gold in women’s figure skating in more than twenty years.

The Liu illustration features her biting her trophy — with her “smiley” piercing and signature striped hair color on full display.

Another image of her skating will be added in the background, though Zermeño said he’s not exactly sure when it’ll all be fully completed.

Nonetheless, he said he hopes it has an impact in the community when it’s done.

“It’d be amazing if she sees this, but this is for us,” he said. “This is for the community, to inspire the youth.”
