Patriots' Diggs faces criminal charges over assault and strangulation

In a surprising turn of events, Stefon Diggs, wide receiver for the New England Patriots and partner to rapper Cardi B, is embroiled in serious legal trouble. Court documents reveal he is facing charges of felony strangulation or suffocation, alongside misdemeanor assault and battery, following an alleged incident in a suburb of Boston on December 2.

The precise details surrounding the allegations are yet to be disclosed. During a virtual court session at Dedham District Court, Diggs’ lawyer, Michael DiStefano, argued that the specifics contained within the police report should remain sealed, keeping the case shrouded in mystery for now.

Despite the lack of public details, DiStefano indicated that Diggs has extended a financial settlement offer to the alleged victim, whose identity has not been revealed, suggesting efforts to resolve the matter outside of court.

According to Boston 25, the 32-year-old athlete is scheduled to be arraigned on January 23, mere days before the anticipated AFC Championship game. This timeline adds an additional layer of complexity to the Patriots’ playoff run, which was secured with their recent commanding victory over the New York Jets.

In the wake of these allegations, Diggs has reportedly denied any wrongdoing to the Patriots’ organization. A statement released by the team to the Daily Mail underscores his insistence on innocence amid these charges, as the father of Cardi B’s fourth child navigates this challenging situation.

‘The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs,’ the statement began. ‘Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations.

‘We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.’

Likewise, an NFL statement acknowledged the charges, but offered little else: ‘We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club. We have no further comment at this time.’

Diggs’ status for Sunday’s season finale against the visiting Miami Dolphins remains unchanged, but the Patriots have already clinched a playoff berth, so there is a chance he could be rested.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection has made a number of headlines in 2025.

One bombshell allegation was made by social media influencer and clothing designer Chris Blake Griffith, who claimed Diggs tried to drug him, made unwanted sexual advances and later conspired to kill him.

In response, Diggs accused Griffith of concocting a lurid tale and sued him for defamation. Griffith has since filed a counterclaim, standing by his accusations against the former All-Pro.

In May, Diggs was seen partying aboard a boat in a viral clip that showed him handling a pink substance believed to be drugs. He would ultimately discuss the incident with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, who has agreed to keep the conversation private, but was never punished by the team or league.

Meanwhile, Diggs and reality TV star Mulan Hernandez are in a legal battle after he sued her for allegedly assaulting him and attempting to extort millions of dollars from him.

Hernandez (real name: Mia Jones) fired back earlier this year, alleging Diggs’ lawsuit was an attempt to get ahead of the truth. In a statement given to TMZ, she claimed Diggs assaulted her, leading to a concussion.

‘On June 7th [of 2024] I was assaulted from behind by Stefon Diggs at our residence an incident that resulted in a concussion,’ she said in February of 2025.

‘This is clearly an attempt to try an get ahead of the truth that is to come,’ she continued. ‘I WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED NOR SILENCED.’

He has also taken criticism from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) over his bespoke furniture and lifestyle brand, which uses real animal fur.

‘Is Stefon Diggs the only person alive who doesn’t understand that, whether they’re killed for clothing or a hideous piece of wall décor, the agony is the same for the terrified coyotes whose limbs are mangled in steel-jaw traps—especially the mothers who know their babies will starve to death without them?’ read a statement from the group.

‘These family-oriented Song Dogs can suffer for days before the hunter returns to shoot or bludgeon them to death and peel the skin from their bodies, so PETA urges Diggs to stick to football and use faux fur for his next arts-and-crafts project.’

But there has been good news for Diggs in 2025 as he resurrected his career in New England after tearing his ACL with the Houston Texans in 2024.
