EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A Las Cruces man was found guilty of first-degree murder after he stabbed, decapitated, and “played soccer” with a 51-year-old man’s head back in 2021, the Doña Ana District Attorney Fernando Macias announced on Wednesday, March 5.
Joel Arciniega-Saenz was found guilty on Wednesday in the killing of James Garcia, 51, that happened back in June 2021 at Apodaca Park in Las Cruces, the DA’s Office said.
The DA’s Office said the verdict comes after a lengthy legal process marked by challenges surrounding the Arciniega-Saenz’s competency.
Arciniega-Saenz, a homeless person at the time of the crime, stabbed Garcia 84 times with a small switchblade, the DA’s Office said.
The DA’s Office said that Arciniega-Saenz decapitated Garcia and severed his finger. He then proceeded to “play soccer” with the victim’s head following the murder.
“It’s a great day for justice. Our office remains committed to working diligently to make our streets safer, one case at a time,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Spencer Willson, who played a key role in prosecuting the case, said.
“Although our office prosecuted this case, the real heroes are the Las Cruces Police Department officers. This was a horrific case that they investigated and stuck with from beginning to end. We commend and appreciate their dedication,” Garcia said. She added, “We are grateful to the officers for their hard work and are glad we could secure justice and make our community safer,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Melissa Garcia said.
“Despite lengthy challenges, we remained steadfast in our pursuit of justice for those affected,” District Attorney Fernando Macias added. “We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of James Garcia and reaffirm our commitment to holding violent offenders accountable and ensuring the safety of this community.”
