Investigators are delving into a police-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in New York City, resulting in the death of a suspect brandishing a knife.
Assistant Chief Charles Minch, leading the NYPD Brooklyn South Command, reported that officers were dispatched following a series of emergency calls at approximately 5:27 p.m. These alerts described a violent individual armed with a knife inside the hospital premises.
The suspect had barricaded himself on the eighth floor with an elderly patient and a hospital security officer. Reports indicate he threatened to harm hospital personnel, inflicted wounds on himself, and attempted to injure others, according to Minch at a press briefing after the event.
Minch emphasized, “This situation underscores the perilous conditions our officers face daily,” while stressing that the details provided were still initial findings.

Minch said officers encountered blood throughout the room and door area and issued repeated verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon. Police attempted to use Tasers multiple times, but they were ineffective.
When the man “advanced toward officers with the weapon in his hand,” officers discharged their firearms, striking him, Minch said. The man was pronounced dead a short time later.
The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
