Operations at Newark Liberty International Airport came to an unexpected halt on Wednesday evening following an “aircraft emergency,” leading to the cancellation of all flights.

In a statement posted on X, the airport announced a temporary suspension of flight activities due to the need to remove an aircraft from the taxiway after an earlier incident.

According to the National Airspace System Status, the New Jersey airport is anticipated to remain closed from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET.

A ground stop was originally in place from 5:42 p.m. to 7 p.m. for an “aircraft emergency” that appeared to be caused by an engine failure on a JetBlue flight headed for Palm Beach, Florida.

The plane was taking off from Newark Airport, but turned around and landed back on the tarmac just 40 minutes into the journey, according to FlightAware.

JetBlue didn’t immediately respond to a request for more info.
