Nintendo delays Switch 2 US preorders over Trump tariffs

() Tariffs announced by President Donald Trump this week have delayed preorders for Nintendo’s Switch 2, which were set to begin next week in the United States.

A Nintendo spokesperson told The Verge on Friday that U.S. preorders for the gaming console, which retails for just under $450, would be pushed back while the company assesses the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Preorders were to begin April 9.

The company said that a new preorder date would be released at a later time.

Nintendo, which is based in Japan, unveiled plans for its Switch 2 console just hours before Trump announced a series of “Liberation Day” tariffs, which the president described as reciprocal. As part of the tariffs, Japan faces a reciprocal 24% tariff on products it imports to the United States.

There is a 46% tariff on products imported from Vietnam, where some of Nintendo’s production of some of its gaming components is based, Forbes reported.

The Nintendo spokesperson told The Verge that the delay of the Switch 2 release in the United States would not impact its planned release date of June 5.

Switch 2 will retail for $499.99, which is $150 more than the original version of the console and $50 higher than the anticipated price of $400, Forbes reported.

The new Switch console includes a larger screen, which allows games to “come alive,” the company said. The console also includes controllers that can be used as a mouse for compatible games. The new gaming system also has a new feature that allows players to chat virtually with other players during the course of games.
