NORAD officials reported that on Thursday, the joint U.S.-Canadian defense organization intercepted five Russian military aircraft. These planes were flying in international airspace near the Bering Strait, positioned to the west of Alaska.
The Russian aircraft were navigating within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), a region where pilots are required to identify themselves. In response, NORAD deployed four fighter jets along with supporting aircraft to track and monitor the Russian planes, ensuring they exited the area, as explained in a statement released on Friday.
“The Russian military aircraft stayed within international airspace and did not breach American or Canadian sovereign territories. Such Russian activities within the Alaskan ADIZ are a common occurrence and are not perceived as a threat,” officials clarified.
