NORTHPORT, Ala. (WIAT) — A teenager was arrested after a man was shot in Northport on Thursday.
According to Jack Kennedy with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, a man who had been shot once arrived at a hospital with serious injuries around 11 p.m. Thursday. The shooting happened in the 1900 block of Harper Road, where shell casings were found. That location is near Tuscaloosa Regional Airport.
Kennedy stated a video showed an automatic weapon was being fired. It was determined that the pistol was modified with a switch for automatic gunfire.
An investigation showed Akari Morgan, 18, was the second party in the shooting. He was arrested Friday and charged with violating the Glock switch act that Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law in March. Morgan’s bond was set at $25,000.
Kennedy stated issues of self-defense were raised. The shooting’s cause and motive are being investigated. Once an investigation is complete, the case will be presented to a grand jury for both parties involved. The grand jury will decide if there are additional charges.
