NYC Mayor Eric Adams aide 'urged City Hall staffers to DELETE texts'

An aide to New York Mayor Eric Adams accused of ‘improper’ behavior ‘urged staffers to delete texts after the FBI raided her home’, a source has claimed.

Director of protocol for international affairs Rana Abbasova was suspended from her  role after the mayor’s lawyers found she had tried to erase the messages, the New York Post reported.

Abbasova was put on leave from her $80,651-a-year role after she was found to have ‘acted improperly’ following an internal probe.

Her alleged misconduct is thought to be related to an FBI investigation into whether Adams’ campaign conspired with a Brooklyn construction company and the Turkish government to funnel foreign money into the campaign’s coffers.

Authorities looking into the matter obtained a court warrant to search the Mayor’s mobile devices to determine if he had also received messages from Abbasova. But he did not receive a message, the source told the New York Post.

‘It was immediately reported to investigators,’ the source added, before clarifying communications between Adams and Abbasova were ‘benign’.

Sources previously claimed that Abbasova had lied to federal investigators, the Post reported.

Her biography on the City Hall page describes her role as fostering ‘closer relationships between the City of New York and the broader diplomatic community’.

She also ‘manages engagements with foreign dignitaries’.

But a source alleged that earlier this year she took on a new role in the mayor’s unit of events planning, working as a ‘body person’ who traveled with the mayor.

They said: ‘Rana was a quiet, unassuming person’.

In her previous role as a community coordinator, when Adams was Brooklyn Borough President, she ‘was responsible for international relations and maintaining relationships between the Borough President and stakeholders, including the Middle East and Central Asian countries.

‘She also worked with Embassies and Consulates to build relationships between countries and the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President to help overcome language barriers and cultural differences. She also organized Turkic Heritage events and assisted with Sister Cities agreements.’

At the same time Abbasova’s New Jersey home was being raided, authorities swooped on another home belonging to someone with ties to the Mayor.

Cenk Öcal, a former Turkish Airlines executive, who served on his transition team, was also subjected to a search, the New York Times reports.

The raids came after FBI seized Adams’ electronic devices two weeks ago – after raiding the Brooklyn home of his top fundraiser and longtime confidante Brianna Suggs, 25, as part of an investigation into an alleged kickback scheme.

Prosecutors are investigating whether Adams fast-tracked a Turkish consulate in Brooklyn in exchange for donations.

His devices were returned to the mayor within a couple of days. The FBI can make copies of the data of seized devices if they have a search warrant.

Adams has since demanded that the federal agency stop leaks of the investigation after CBS reported the FBI was looking into a 2021 text sent to the mayor.

The texts revealed that the Turkey consul general asked about opening the new consul building on First Avenue across from the United Nations.

Adams, who at the time was the Brooklyn borough president, did not reply to the message but did forward it to former fire department chief Daniel Nigro.

After news of his devices being seized broke, the Mayor told CNN ‘he has nothing to hide.’

He said: ‘As a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any sort of investigation — and I will continue to do exactly that.’

Suggs, Adams’ top fundraiser, had her home raided on November 2 while her boss was on his way to meetings in Washington D.C. which he had to abruptly cancel. The timing was deliberate, sources claimed.

The New York Times obtained part of the search warrant, which revealed it was connected to an inquiry into Adams’s 2021 mayoral campaign.

Adams has stood by Suggs and neither have been accused of wrongdoing yet. His attorney Boyd Johnson said he is cooperating with the federal investigation.

Last week he admitted helping to get a Turkish consulate approval to open, but insisted this was within the normal parameters of his job as a politician.
