A NYU law school student who was ousted as the bar association’s president over their anti-Israel remarks is doubling down on their position and calling for a nation-wide college walkout this week.

Ryna Workman – who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns – was stripped of the title after calling the Hamas attack on Israel ‘necessary’ in a letter to students earlier this month.

In a statement last week, Ryna said they never ‘intended’ to be insensitive to the plight of Israelis, 1,400 of whom were killed by Hamas.

‘I’ve been getting a lot of backlash for the message I sent to my fellow NYU Law students where I voiced my support for the human rights of Palestinians.

‘My message came across as insensitive to the suffering of Israelis during a time of crisis and that is not what I intended.

‘When I step back to think about the situation, I cannot reconcile the fact that some of the loudest calls for acknowledgement of Israeli pain are ignoring the loss of Palestinian children in Gaza.

‘And I am frightened that the far-right Israeli government is using this pain to justify their campaign of ethnic cleansing,’ they said.

Ryna posted a link to the statement on Instagram along with the caption: ‘I will not be silent!’

Now, they are joining calls for a nationwide student walkout of NYU students to ‘to call for an end to the US-backed siege on Gaza and U.S. military funding and arms to Israel.’

‘Our institutions are investing in the genocidal siege of Palestine. Their money, their words, and programs make Israel’s occupation and violence possible.

‘They try to silence us, because they need us to be afraid, confused, and divided. But we, as a united movement for Palestinian liberation, choose to dissent.

‘We have the power and duty to force our institutions to end support for Israeli occupation,’ Ryna said in their post.

Ryna and the other protests are demanding that NYU ‘divest from Israel’s occupation and genocide of the Palestinian people.’

The school has not yet commented on the planned walkout this week.

Earlier this month, a spokesman said in response to Ryna’s original statement: ‘The statement issued by the president of the Student Bar Association does not in any way reflect the point of view of NYU, which condemns the terrorist attack on Israel. Acts of terrorism are immoral.

‘The indiscriminate killing of civilians and hostage-taking, including children and the elderly, is reprehensible.

‘Blaming victims of terrorism for their own deaths is wrong.’
