CHICAGO (WLS) — A third investigation has been opened into a Chicago police officer tied to the death of Officer Krystal Rivera.

The officer in question was Rivera’s partner. Investigators say he accidentally shot and killed her in the line of duty this year.

He’s also now under investigation for an alleged attack on an off-duty officer at a bar over the weekend.

The same officer is now accused of trying to gather any video evidence of that attack.

The Chicago Police Department said Thursday it’s investigating one of its own officers for possibly meddling in an investigation about an alleged attack he’s accused of instigating on a Wicker Park sidewalk Sunday night.

A number of surveillance cameras keeping watch over a busy stretch of North Milwaukee Avenue through Wicker Park could have captured an alleged attack by an off-duty Chicago police officer against another outside the DSTRKT Bar and Grill late Sunday night.

The accused attacker, named in a police report filed by the alleged female victim, who is also a Chicago police officer, is the very same police officer who CPD says accidentally shot his partner, Officer Krystal Rivera, on a call earlier this summer.

ABC7 is not naming the officer because he’s not been charged with a crime in either incident.

The manager of a neighboring business to the bar told us he got a call from an employee Wednesday afternoon saying a man had called the store looking for surveillance video of the Sunday night incident.

The manager showed ABC7 the caller ID. The time stamp was 3:01 p.m. on August 13, just as word of the alleged officer on officer attack was surfacing.

ABC7 called the number, which went right to voicemail.

The last name and number on the ID match the name of the officer accused of physically attacking his female colleague Sunday

According to a police report obtained by the ABC7 I-Team, the accused officer had wanted her to delete videos she had taken on her cell phone in the bar.

CPD says the male officer is currently on medical leave, and sources say that means he should be performing no duties related to investigations or any kind of police work.

As the I-Team reported last month, a 2024 disciplinary report from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said the officer who shot and killed Officer Rivera had five previous complaints of misconduct where findings were sustained. The officer faced three suspensions and two reprimands in just four years with the department.

The manager said he told his employee to tell the caller he’d have to reach out to the store’s owner through official channels for any surveillance video.

The Chicago Police Department says that possible phone call is now also under investigation.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is now investigating the alleged attack outside the bar.
