OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KFOR) – A new 34-question assessment designed to weed out “woke” educators interested in coming to Oklahoma is virtually impossible to fail.
The assessment was put together in a partnership between the Oklahoma State Department of Education and PragerU, a Christian and conservative non-profit; that is also not accredited. A page created on PragerU’s website for the Teacher Qualification Test assessment says it is meant to counter state-mandated trainings, like those required in California that PragerU believes undermines the quality of the United States’ education system.
“Unless you are a Marxist indoctrinator, this shouldn’t be that difficult,” said State Superintendent Ryan Walters in a recorded video tied to the assessment. “If you are, to your core, you are trying to get into a classroom to warp the minds of America’s youth into hating this country and to just hating basic facts, rejecting common sense, well yeah, we don’t want you in the classroom.”
The test questions are largely focused around American history, Biology and parental rights; but you don’t currently have to study up to past the assessment.
Shawn Ashley, publisher of Oklahoma online legislative tracking and news service Quorum Call, first pointed out the exploit in a social media post Monday. He said that after taking the test, and deliberately answering each question incorrectly it became obvious there was a workaround. The 34-question test is multiple choice with four possible answers. Ashley said that even after the three incorrect answers were selected a person taking the test will still be prompted over and over until they select the correct answer. The test then proceeds as if that person never guessed incorrectly in the first place.
“Answered incorrectly a third time, and it gave me an opportunity for a fourth try and the correct answer,” said Ashley. “So I did all 34 questions that way and received the certificate of passage as a result.”
affiliate KFOR employees tested the same method as Ashley and verified his account, earning the certificate regardless of whether any employee knew the answer to the question or not. The completion screen for the test also prompts the person taking the tests with multiple requests to donate to PragerU as either a one-time or monthly donation.
“It seems like it does defeat the purpose of what the test was designed to do, because you don’t have to know the information to ultimately get the answer right and to receive the certification,” said Ashley.
KFOR reached out to State Superintendent Ryan Walters office for comment Monday, but has not heard back.
KFOR also took questions from the assessment to a local park and interviewed Oklahomans to see whether or not they knew the answers. Two Oklahomans KFOR asked answered less than half of the questions correctly. They both expressed doubt about whether all of the questions asked were necessary for every out of state teacher in Oklahoma.
