'Choco-holic' opossum hospitalized after annihilating entire Costco chocolate cake

A possum with a love for sweets ended up in the hospital after devouring a whole Costco chocolate mousse cake that had been placed outside on a porch of a real estate agent’s house in Nebraska this past week.

Kim Doggett and her son discovered the distressed critter curled up on her patio furniture on Sunday, multiple outlets reported.

“She didn’t look so great – she was kind of panting,” Doggett told The Washington Post.

Chocolate-colored paw prints covered her beige couch – and the nearly devoured dessert was on the floor of her deck, the reports said.

The real estate agent, Doggett, shared with Forbes that due to limited space in the fridge, they often leave food outside in the cold winter temperatures, including this indulgent dessert.

Despite the attempts made by Doggett and her son to relocate the nocturnal marsupial from their Omaha property, they were unsuccessful. It was then that they began to wonder, and later researched online, about the potential toxicity of chocolate to opossums, similar to its effects on dogs and other pets.

While opossums will eat almost anything – chocolate could be poisonous to the mild-mannered mammals, they learned.

“I knew there was no way I could just leave a sick opossum there overnight,” she told The Washington Post. “Obviously, it had too much of a good thing.”

The nearly six-pound Virginia opossum – the only marsupial species in the US – was admitted to Nebraska Wildlife Rehab on Monday, where the furry creature is expected to make a full recovery, the wildlife rescue shared on social media.

The staff cheekily coined the animal the “Cake Bandit,” with the organization designing custom-made Opossum Cake Bandit t-shirts to support their native wildlife saving mission.

But for now, they said the “cranky” critter is on a restricted diet.

“Sometimes a sweet tooth just can’t wait until Valentine’s Day. With some time in rehab (and a diet reset), this choco-holic should be stabilized enough to return to the wild but until then, she is definitely a little cranky about our strict “zero chocolate” policy,” Nebraska Wildlife Rehab posted to Facebook.

“Same, opossum…. same.”

The now-viral post had received thousands of comments from sympathetic observers on social media as of Saturday.

“We’ve all been there, girl,” one person said under the wildlife rescue’s Facebook post.

Another commenter said, “It’s okay, lil dude.”

“I don’t know how to act around chocolate cake either.”
