CHICAGO (WLS) — A man has been charged with killing an 18-year-old and injuring another in a West Side shooting and armed robbery that happened early Sunday morning, Chicago police said.

Police arrested 35-year-old Ortez Owens 14 hours after the attack. He is facing several charges, including first-degree, attempted murder and armed robbery, in connection with the South Austin shooting, which happened around 4:37 a.m. Sunday in the 5000-block of West Maypole Avenue.

The victims, two 18-year-old men, were arguing with Owens and another person, who were inside a vehicle, police said in their initial report. That’s when the two inside the vehicle fired shots, striking both victims.

Police said Owens took property from the 18-year-olds.

One of the victims, who was shot in the back, died from his injuries. The medical examiner identified him as Kaleb Williams.

The other victim, who was shot in the arm, was hospitalized in good condition.

Kaleb’s parents, Nikita and Jeonnie Campbell, said the teen was out with friends when he was killed.

“Kids out there, look, it is dangerous out there. It’s scary. Listen to the people who pour into you,” Jeonnie said.

While charges will not bring back their son, they are grateful that someone will be facing justice.

“I am so happy and grateful that they work so diligently, really hard to catch this guy so that he can no longer do this to any other kid or person on the street. I’m glad that it is justice is done,” Nikita said.

Kaleb’s family said he had plans to enlist in the military after finishing high school. He had many interests, including music and sports.

“When I first got the news, of course I was numb,” said Arthur Sutton, Kaleb’s grandfather. “It’s the worst thing that a parent wants to get to that phone call late at night that something has happened.”

The shooting that took Kaleb’s life was one of three on Chicago’s West Side that happened hours apart on Sunday.

“This is overwhelming. I’m overwhelmed with so many emotions. I’m scared. I’m angry,” Nikita said.

Investigators are working to figure out if those shootings are connected.
