In the latest installment of Outlander Season 8, Episode 3, titled “Abies Fraseri,” viewers witness Claire (Caitriona Balfe) harness a mysterious “blue light” energy, a magical element that first appeared in Season 2 of the popular Starz series.
**Warning: Spoilers ahead for Outlander Season 8 Episode 3 “Abies Fraseri,” now available for streaming on Starz**
Midway through this episode, a young girl named Agnes Whitaker (Annelle Olaleye) urgently seeks Claire’s help for her mother, Susannah (Estella Daniels), who is experiencing complications while giving birth to twins. True to her nature, Claire jumps into action to assist.
Claire successfully helps Susannah deliver a healthy baby boy, but the birth of the second child—a girl—seems tragic, as she is initially stillborn. This moment triggers a flashback to Claire’s past loss of her own child, Faith, in Paris during Season 2, with echoes from the voices of Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) and Mother Hildegarde (Frances de la Tour) resonating in her mind. Just as hope seems lost, Claire manages to revive the baby, with the familiar blue light and bird associated with Master Raymond’s “miracles” appearing moments before the newborn’s first cry.
The question arises: Has Claire inherited Master Raymond’s extraordinary ability to resurrect the deceased?
“I mean, we know that that Claire has something. That’s from the days in France,” Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Davis told DECIDER. “There’s magic in Outlander. We know that, too. That’s a given. She touched a rock and went through time. So there’s magic somewhere.”
“I think over the years, Claire has started to understand in the sense that she believes it, whether she knows how to use it, I don’t…” Roberts then caught himself. “You know, that’s kind of a wait and see situation.”
Caitriona Balfe also felt that this latest development was less of a curveball than a natural progression of Claire’s abilities.
“Look, I don’t think that this has come out of the blue. I think that throughout the series — not just the Master Raymond of it all — but throughout the series, there have been moments where Claire has had a sense of things,” Balfe told DECIDER. “You know, she has touched skulls before and being able to tell certain things about it.”
“And she’s a time traveler, so you know she is able to connect into a different realm, I think. Yeah. This is maybe one consequence of that.”
There are only five more episodes left in Outlander‘s run — the series finale comes out May 8 — which means we might finally get definitive explanations for several lingering mysteries. If Claire is finally able to harness her “blue light” powers to save lives, maybe that means she’ll also eventually learn how exactly she’s connected to Master Raymond.
