More than 90,000 registered Duval Co. voters listed as 'inactive'

Don’t panic yet, you can still vote in the general election. However, here’s important information you should know.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — With just seven weeks until the general election, more than 90,000 registered voters in Duval County are considered ‘inactive.’

Data from the Duval County Supervisor of Elections shows there is a total of 640,281 registered voters in the county; roughly 15% of them are ‘inactive.’

Despite the label, being an inactive voter doesn’t mean a person can’t vote. The county’s supervisor of elections, Jerry Holland, said they are still eligible. An inactive voter means the county’s voting system does not know where the voter lives.

However, Holland told First Coast News voters have to participate in the next two federal elections. If one chooses not to update their information such as their address at that time, then they will be required to re-register, according to a new Florida law that took effect last year.

Moreover, it is state law that a person has to vote in the precinct in which they live in. Holland said if a voter goes to the wrong precinct, poll workers will share with the person the correct location to go vote.

“So, in that case, they could vote provisional, but it would go to the canvassing board and voting in the wrong polling location is gonna negate your vote,” Holland said. “The best thing is to go to an early voting site. We can update your address at an early voting site and get you right in there to vote.”
