NEW YORK — A fire broke out under a New Jersey train on Monday, sending several people to the hospital and temporarily suspending service for most of the morning.

The fire spewed smoke through the PATH train and Newport Station just before 6:20 a.m. and passengers were evacuated on the platform.

Officials with Port Authority Trans-Hudson say 13 people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and nine of those went to the hospital for further evaluation.

Video showed flames shooting up from under the train and heavy smoke inside. People can be heard on the video saying “open the door,” and “easy, easy,” as they eventually disembark.

The fire caused a chaotic morning for commuters with suspensions between Hoboken and World Trade Center and 33rd Street, and between Journal Square and 33rd Street stations.

Commuters trying to get into New York City were turned away from the Newport station all morning long.

Officials said normal PATH train service resumed by 11 a.m. after hours of disruptions.

Down on the platform at Newport, there was no sign of any damage from the morning train fire.

The incident is under investigation.

The PATH trains conduct an average of about 165,000 passenger trips daily across the Hudson River from northern New Jersey into Manhattan.
