Despite sharing a last name, Patty García is not related to Congressman García, who represents Illinois’ 4th District.

As she embarks on her campaign, Patty García faces the challenge of addressing criticisms about the last-minute decisions that secured her spot on the ballot.

Congressman “Chuy” García has decided not to seek another term, citing health concerns and family commitments as his reasons for stepping down, he revealed to ABC7.

While García admits that the decision not to run was difficult, his timing—just before the filing deadline—has sparked allegations from some quarters that he was engaging in political maneuvering.

He filed petitions with the Illinois State Board of Elections to run for his seat on October 27.

Days later, Patty García did the same, just before the deadline.

Then the congressman announced he’s not seeking reelection but plans to finish out his term.

Patty García is now the only choice for the Democratic nomination in the 4th district.

She became the congressman’s chief of staff in 2023 after serving as his district director.

She launched her campaign on Wednesday morning in Cicero.

Some local and state leaders are also expected to be there supporting her.
